Since 1980, the Bodine Street Community Garden has provided much needed urban green space in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. Neighbors turned this previously abandoned and unsightly lot into an urban oasis.
In 2003 the garden's land was put on the market. If bought by a developer, the garden, along with its large Isaiah Zagar mosaic tile mural, would have been destroyed.
We the gardeners and neighbors of the Bodine Street Community Garden were committed to saving this precious urban green space. Along with the help of the Neighborhood Gardens Association and City Councilperson Frank DiCicco we fought to keep our garden from being sold.
On July 11, 2007 our garden was turned over to the Neighborhood Gardens Association and is now protected, urban green space.
